Susan Shockley
The Parthenon
The use of comparisons and dichotomies are utilized in the paintings of Millie Jarrett. The role of opposites in the physical act of painting becomes the guiding principal for her creative translations. The delicate transparencies and veils of light with hidden images are often created by distressing the canvas: scraping, sanding, scratching, and all the while building layer after layer.
The methodical process of paint upon paint is both violent and patient. Something new and exciting comes to the surface with each encounter, as Jarrett guides the painting to its own conclusion. Through her use of intuition and skill, she leaves the viewer with what appears to be moments captured in paint.
